Links Are Dead - I Know

I keep getting Emails from people asking me to re-upload the links and music etc. I think people are just getting to those particular pages so are not reading the reason for the dead links.

So I am putting this in place so hopefully people will read it and stop Emailing me about it.

The reason the links are dead is that my account with Media Fire has been closed with all 11,000 files lost. That is why you can not download the things and No I can not re-upload them.

Eventually I will start doing that again when I have found something suitable. In the meantime this blog will be information only blog.

Thank you all

Michaael

Level 42 - The Sun Goes Down (Living It Up)

'The Sun Goes Down (Living It Up)' is a single released in 1983 by Level 42. It is one of the few songs by the group which featured Mike Lindup on lead vocals (although Mark King did contribute as lead vocalist on this track).

After the success of The Chinese Way, and of the album The Pursuit of Accidents, Level 42 released a new album called Standing in the Light. The second single from the album was called 'The Sun Goes Down (Living It Up).

The song was outstanding in the bands career as it became a classic reaching Number 10 in the UK Singles charts in the summer of 1983, it became their first single to reach the top ten.

Eurythmics - Never Gonna Cry Again

'Never Gonna Cry Again' was the debut single release from Eurythmics, taken from their debut album 'In the Garden'. It achieved little commercial success, managing number 63 in UK singles chart, especially compared to Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart's previous hits with The Tourists.

The single release was accompanied by Eurythmics first music video, a medium for which they would later receive notable acclaim. As of 2009, the 'Never Gonna Cry Again' video remains commercially unavailable, although stills from it were used for the sleeve art of the 'In The Garden' album, and footage from it can also be seen during the song 'Jennifer' on the Sweet Dreams video album. The music video features Lennox walking about on a beach in a red dress.

The single sleeve design featured an eerie picture of Lennox made up to look like a gargoyle.

Co-produced by respected krautrock producer Conny Plank, the recordings also featured two members of krautrock band Can.

Musically, 'Never Gonna Cry Again' is a moody, melancholic number. It is notable for containing a flute solo performed by Annie Lennox, one of the few times that Lennox was to use the instrument in her pop career, despite having studied it at the prestigious Royal College of Music in London. The song also is based around a reggae style bass line, a musical trait that numerous new wave bands experimented with at the time.

The single's B-side, 'Le Sinistre', is an experimental piece, featuring musical arrangements more akin to a horror movie soundtrack than a pop record.

Eurythmics - Belinda

'Belinda' was the second single from Eurythmics, lifted from their debut album 'In the Garden'. It was a commercial flop, despite being one of the more accessible and poppy songs on the album.

No music video was made for the single.

Produced with respected producer Conny Plank, and featured members of Can, and also Robert Görl of D.A.F., who was romantically linked to Lennox at the time.

The B-side, 'Heartbeat, Heartbeat', is a pounding uptempo krautrock number.

Prince Charming is the third and final album by Adam and the Ants, released in 1981.

Unlike 'Kings of the Wild Frontier', Prince Charming showed the Ants moving away from their earlier Burundi drum style. It is also noticeable that this album is the first without Kevin Mooney, the bassist from 'Kings of the Wild Frontier'.

The album spawned three hits; 'Stand and Deliver', 'Prince Charming', and 'Ant Rap'.

Dave Stewart And Barbara Gaskin - It's My Party

'It's My Party' was originally released by American singer Lesley Gore in 1963. This song hit number 1 on both the pop and rhythm and blues charts in the United States. In the U.K. 'It's My Party', peaked at number 9, becoming Gore's only major hit in the U.K.

In 1981 Dave Stewart recruited friend and former Hatfield backing vocalist Barbara Gaskin to record a version of the '60s teen lament 'It's My Party'. Released in the autumn of 1981, the single reached number 1 in Britain and Germany and topped the UK charts for four weeks.

The video also included Barbara Gaskins close friend Thomas Dolby as the man she has lost and is crying for,

Adam And The Ants- Ant Music

'Antmusic' was the third single released in the UK in 1980, from the hugely popular Adam and the Ants album 'Kings of the Wild Frontier'.

'Antmusic' fared better in the UK Singles Chart (than it's previous 2 singles) by peaking at number 2 in January 1981, being held off the top by the re-release of John Lennon's 'Imagine' after his murder in New York City in December 1980.

The video to 'Antmusic' featured the group playing in a discothèque with a giant juke box, and persuading the young audience to turn away from disco music and dance to the new-styled 'Ant-Music'.

The chart success of the single was even better in Australia, where it spent five weeks at No. 1, and earned the band platinum certification for sales of over 100,000. Adam and the Ants toured Australia in 1981 and appeared on influential TV pop show Countdown.

Dave Stewart And Barbara Gaskin - Locomotion

I had a request for this a while ago from Boom (sorry for delay)and it has taken me a little time to put it up here. I was putting up the 'it's My Party' track (that's the next one) as I just loved that but decided to kick off with this one instead. Hope you like it.

'The Loco-Motion' is a 1962 popular music song written by American songwriters Gerry Goffin and Carole King. The song is notable for appearing in the American Top 5 three times – each time in a different decade: for Eva Boyd (under the stage name Little Eva) during 1962 (U.S. number 1); for Grand Funk Railroad in 1974 (U.S. number 1); and for Kylie Minogue in 1988 (U.S. number 3, number 2 in the UK).

However there is a lesser know version. Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin recorded their version of the song in 1986. It became the duo's last hit, reaching number 70 on the UK singles chart.

Don't know if a video was ever made for this. If there is one and someone is willing to share then please let me know.

Ghostbusters - Soundtrack

Ghostbusters (titled on-screen as Ghost Busters) is a 1984 science-fiction comedy film written by co-stars Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis about three eccentric New York City parapsychologists-turned-ghost exterminators

The concept was inspired by Aykroyd's own fascination with the paranormal and it was conceived as a vehicle for himself and friend John Belushi.

The original story, as written by Aykroyd, was very different than what was eventually filmed. In that early version, a group of Ghostbusters travelled through time, space and other dimensions taking on huge ghosts (of which the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man was just one of many). Also, the Ghostbusters wore S.W.A.T.-like outfits and used wands instead of Proton Packs to fight the ghosts.

Aykroyd pitched his story to director / producer Ivan Reitman, who liked the basic idea but immediately saw the budgetary impossibilities demanded by Aykroyd's first draft. At Reitman's suggestion, the story was given a major overhaul, eventually evolving into the final screenplay which Aykroyd and Ramis hammered out over the course of three weeks. Aykroyd and Ramis initially wrote the script with roles written especially for Belushi, Eddie Murphy and John Candy. However, Belushi died during the writing of the screenplay, and neither Murphy nor Candy would commit to the movie, so Aykroyd and Ramis shifted some of these changes around and polished a basic, yet sci-fi oriented screenplay for their final draft.

In addition to Aykroyd's high-concept basic premise, and Ramis' skill at grounding the fantastic elements with a realistic setting, the film benefits from Bill Murray's semi-improvisational performance as Peter Venkman, the character initially intended for Belushi.

Louis Tully was originally conceived to be a conservative man in a business suit played by comedian John Candy, but with Candy unable to commit to the role, it was taken by Rick Moranis, portraying Louis as a geek. Gozer was originally going to appear in the form of Ivo Shandor as a slender, unremarkable man in a suit played by Paul Reubens. In the end, the role was played by Yugoslav model Slavitza Jovan.

Harold Ramis had no intention of acting in any role in the film as he planned on only helping Aykroyd write the screenplay. However, the crew struggled to cast the role of Egon Spengler, even after renowned actors such as Chevy Chase, Michael Keaton, Christopher Walken, John Lithgow, Christopher Lloyd, and Jeff Goldblum, were considered. Feeling he knew the character best since he created him, Ramis accepted the role of Egon. He credits this move in revitalizing his acting career, as Ramis had previously focused on off-screen work such as writing and directing.

Winston Zeddemore was written with Eddie Murphy in mind, but he had to decline the role as he was filming Beverly Hills Cop at the same time. If Murphy had been cast, Zeddemore would have been hired much earlier in the film, and would have accompanied the trio on their hunt for Slimer at the hotel and be slimed in place of Peter Venkman. When Ernie Hudson took over, it was decided that he be brought in later to indicate how the Ghostbusters were struggling to keep up with the outbreak of ghosts.

The film score was composed by Elmer Bernstein, contributing to the film were Peter Bernstein, David Spear and Patrick Russ.

The hit theme song, 'Ghostbusters', written and performed by Ray Parker, Jr. sparked the catchphrases "Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!" and "I ain't afraid of no ghost(s)". The song was a huge international hit.

The music video produced for the song is considered one of the key productions of the already booming music video industry, and was a number 1 MTV video. Directed by Ivan Reitman, produced by Jeffrey Abelson, and conceptualised by Keith Williams, the video integrated footage of the film in a specially designed, haunted house made entirely of neon. Film footage was intercut with a humorous performance by Parker, and featured cameo appearances by celebrities who joined in the call and response chorus.

Ray Parker Jr - Ghostbusters

Ghostbusters" is a 1984 song recorded by Ray Parker, Jr. as the theme to the film of the same name that starred Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd.

It hit number two on the UK singles Chart and number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

According to Parker, he was approached by the film's producers to create a theme song for the film. Unfortunately, he only had a few days to do so and the film's title seemed impossible to include in any lyrics. However, when watching television late at night, Parker saw a cheap commercial for a local service that reminded him that the film had a similar commercial featured for the fictional business. This inspired him to write the song as a pseudo-advertising jingle that the business could have commissioned as a promotion.

A music video for the song featured a young woman, played by Cindy Harrell, who was being haunted by a ghost portrayed by Parker, roaming a nearly all-black house interior with vibrant neon designs outlining the sparse architectural and industrial features. It also contained footage from the film Ghostbusters, and featured cameos from famous celebrities such as Chevy Chase, Irene Cara, John Candy, Melissa Gilbert, Jeffrey Tambor, George Wendt, Al Franken, Danny DeVito, Carly Simon, Peter Falk and Teri Garr, all exclaiming the "Ghostbusters!" line in the song.

The video concludes with Parker and the stars of the film, in full Ghostbuster costume, dancing down the streets of New York City.

This cover version of a 1960s Australian hit by the Easybeats was originally recorded to promote the Australian Made tour of Australia in early 1987, headlined by INXS and Barnes.

The soundtrack also features a cover version of The Doors' song 'People Are Strange' by Echo and the Bunnymen. The song as it featured in the movie is an alternate, shortened version with a slightly different music arrangement. This version has not been released as of yet.

Lou Gramm, the famed lead singer of Foreigner, also recorded 'Lost in the Shadows' for the soundtrack, along with a video which featured clips from the film. The theme song, 'Cry Little sister', was originally recorded by Gerard McMahon (under his pseudonym of Gerard McMann) for the soundtrack, and later re-released on his self-titled album 'G Tom Mac' in 2000. Animotion - Animotion Album

Animotion originally had six members, four of whom (lead singler Astrid Plane, keyboardist Paul Antonelli, bassist Charles Ottavio, and drummer Frenchy O'Brien) had originally been members of the band Red Zone.

After the demise of that band, the four aforementioned members set about creating a new group. Lead singer / guitarist Bill Wadhams joined soon thereafter to co-front the new band with Plane.

After the formation of Animotion around this nucleus, lead guitarist Don Kirkpatrick was brought on board, completing the line-up. They released their self-titled debut album in 1984. The following year, a single from this album, 'Obsession' brought the band international success, making it to number 5 in the UK Singles Chart and became the band's first US Billboard Hot 100 Top Ten single. The follow-up single from this album, 'Let Him Go' also cracked the U.S. Top 40. but only made number 78 in the UK.

Torch Song Trilogy - Soundtrack

I have recently posted some soundtracks to films that I have in my collection that other people had requested. This got me to thinking that I would like to do some posts charting the movies that I loved back in the 80's.
So this is the first in an ongoing series of posts about the films that I loved and were special to me. Starting with.......

Torch Song Trilogy is a 1988 comedy / drama / romance adapted by Harvey Fierstein from his play of the same title. The film was directed by Paul Bogart, starring Fierstein as Arnold, Anne Bancroft as Ma Beckoff, Matthew Broderick as Alan, Brian Kerwin as Ed, and Eddie Castrodad as David.

Wanting to highlight the work of female impersonator Charles Pierce, Fierstein created the role of Bertha Venation specifically for him. Broderick originally refused the role of Alan because he was recuperating from an automobile accident in Ireland. Tate Donavan was cast, but two days into the rehearsal period Broderick had a change of heart and contacted Fierstein, who fired Donovan.

Although the play was over four hours, the film was restricted to a running time of two hours at the insistence of New Line Cinema, necessitating much editing and excisions. The time frame was regressed to begin several years earlier than when the play was set.

Cast
Anne Bancroft as Ma Beckoff
Matthew Broderick as Alan Simon
Harvey Fierstein as Arnold Beckoff
Brian Kerwin as Ed Reese
Karen Young as Laurel

This is one of my all time fav movies as it winds through the hardship and fun of a gay man trying to live. This was on around the time when I was trying to come to terms with myself being gay. This film in some way captured me and made me think that it was OK to be gay.

Animotion - Obsession

'Obsession' is a 1985 song recorded by New Wave synth-dance group Animotion. The song hit number six in the Uited states, and number five in the United Kingdom in early 1985, helped by a distinct video that received heavy rotation on MTV.

The song was originally written and recorded as a duet by songwriter Holly Knight and musician Michael Des barres in 1983, although the recording did not perform well. This version was prominently featured in the 1983 film A Night in Heaven, most notably in a scene in which a male stripper gyrates his crotch in Lesley Ann Warren's face in sync with the rhythm of the song.

The song was featured on the film's soundtrack, but did not receive enough attention to warrant much radio play or a place on any Billboard charts.

Now the songs more well known by Animotion and is still played today.

Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse Of The Heart

'Total Eclipse of the Heart' is a song written and produced by Jim Steinman and recorded by Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler in 1983 on her fifth studio album 'Faster Than The Speed Of Night'.
The song remains Tyler's most successful song, peaking at number 1 in the United Kingdom, United States, Australia and Canada. At its peak, it sold 60,000 copies per day, and approximately 6 million copies in total. It won the Variety Club award in the UK for best single of 1983.

Tyler's career reached new heights with this release and put her as the only Welsh artist to hit the number-one slot in the U.S Billboard charts.

According to Meat Loaf, Steinman had given the song, along with 'Making Love (Out of Nothing At All)' to Meat Loaf for his 'Midnight at the Lost and Found' album. However, Meat Loaf's record company refused to pay for Steinman and he wrote separate songs himself. Steinman's songs were then given to Bonnie Tyler and Air Supply, respectively.
The music video was directed by Russell Mulcahy. It was story-boarded by Jim Steinman and drew inspiration from the 1976 film Futurewold.

The Gothic themed video features Bonnie Tyler clad in white, apparently having a dream or fantasy about her students in a boys' boarding school. Young men are seen dancing and participating in various school activities such as swim team, karate, fencing, football, and singing in a choir. The video was shot at Holloway Sanatorium.

The original version of the song, on Faster Than the Speed of Night, was just over seven minutes in length. Thus, an edited version was, and still is most commonly played on radio. The radio version is four and a half minutes, and removes the entire third verse and trims the extended fade-out ending. The music video version is roughly one minute longer than the radio version.

Kylie Minogue - I Should Be So Lucky

After the success of her debut single 'Locomotion' in Australia, Minogue traveled to London to work with Stock, Aitkin and Waterma.

They knew little of Minogue and had forgotten that she was arriving; as a result, they wrote 'I Should Be So Lucky' in forty minutes while she waited outside the recording studio. Mike Stock wrote the lyrics for the song in response to what he had learned about Minogue prior to her arrival. He believed that although she was a successful soap star in Australia and very talented, there must be something wrong with her and figured that she must be unlucky in love.

Minogue recorded the song in less than an hour, which Stock attributes to her good ear for music and her quick memorization skills. After Minogue finished the recording session she returned home to Australia to continue work on the soap Neighbours.

The music video was directed by Chris Langman and filmed in November 1987 at Channel 7 Studios in Melbourne, Australia. The video features Minogue walking through her home, with scenes of her dancing in front of a colourful chalkboard background intercut throughout. It presented a cute, wholesome, young "girl next door" image of Minogue to the public, with scenes of her giggling and making funny faces to the camera.

'I Should Be So Lucky' entered the UK Singles Chart on 9 January 1988 at number ninety, before rising to number one. It maintained the number one position for five weeks and became the third biggest selling single of the year with sales of 672,568. In Australia, the song reached number one on the single chart and became the country's highest selling single of 1988. In the United States, the song peaked at number twenty-eight on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Minogue's first US top forty release.

Kylie Monogue - The Locomotion

'The Loco-Motion' is a 1962 song written by American songwriters Gerry Goffin and Carole King.

After an impromptu performance of the song at an Australian Rules Football charity event with the cast of the Australian soap opera Neighbours, Kylie Minogue signed a record deal by Mushroom Records to release the song as a single.

The single was released on July 28, 1987 in Australia, Sweden and Italy under the title 'Locomotion'. The song was a success in Australia, reaching number one and remaining there for seven weeks.

The success of the song in her home country resulted in her signing a record deal with PWL Records which enabled Kylie to work with the successful team Stock, Aitken and Waterman, who had produced the single.

The 1988 release of the song in the UK debuted at number two on the singles chart — the highest entry on the UK singles charts by a female artist — due to strong 7" single sales and radio airplay. It remained in the number two position for four weeks before falling to number three. With sales of 440,000 it was the 11th best selling single of the year. The song became Minogue's third top five rated single in the UK and remains one of her most successful single releases to date.

During late 1988, Minogue traveled to the US to promote 'The Loco-Motion', where she did many interviews and performances on American television. 'The Loco-Motion' debuted at number eighty on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and later climbed to number three for two weeks. The song was Minogue's second single to chart in the U.S., but her first to reach the top ten.

The music video was filmed at Essendon Airport and the ABC studios in Melbourne Australia.

Band Of Gold - Various Singles

Well I am going to do something a little different for this post. Dave Brummer requested the Belinda Carlisle - Band Of Gold (Extended Mix) version. Mark has this so I've put it up for Dave (hope you like it). I remember the single from the original version by Freda Payne, and just loved the song, so I thought it would be good to do a post with some of the various versions of the song that have been released. Starting with the original. So here is a post dedicated to one song with different artists who have covered it. Hope you like this.

'Band of Gold' is a popular song written by Holland, Dozier and Holland, under the pseudonym Edith Wayne and Ron Dunbar, and first recorded by Freda Payne.

A smash hit for Payne in 1970, the song has been covered by numerous artists, notably dueling 1986 versions by contrasting pop divas Belinda Carlisile and Bonnie Tyler, and a 2007 version by Kimberley Locke.

When Holland, Dozier and Holland first offered the song to Freda Payne, she balked at the idea of recording it, finding the material more appropriate for a teenager or very young woman. Payne reluctantly gave in after much persuasion by Dunbar. Almost immediately following its release the Payne record became an instant pop smash, reaching number 3 in the US and hitting number 1 on the UK singles chart and remaining there for six weeks in September 1970, giving Payne her first gold record.

The song tells a story of a recently married woman whose husband is incapable of loving her (even though he tried), resulting in the couple sleeping in separate rooms on their honeymoon, to her dismay. It would appear that the marriage ended in the husband's abandoning his bride, leaving her with no more than the titular 'band of gold'. Possible interpretations of the lyrics might include an allusion to the husband's impotence, or perhaps his homosexuality.

Despite both coming off major hits and working with noted musicians, neither the Belinda Carlisle nor the Bonnie Tyler versions were major hits.

Bonnie Tyler's 1986 version was produced by Jim Steinman with the track being given a slew of Hi-NRG remixes helping it make it to number 83 in the UK Singles Chart. The song was the third single off her Secret Dreams And Forbidden Fire album.

Belinda Carlisle 1986 Version was also given dance remixes featuring vocals by Freda Payne herself, that appear on a 2003 CD re-issue of the album Belinda. The single did not chart in the UK but made it to number 26 in the US Dance Club Play, 38 on the US Hot Dance singles Chart and number 91 on the Canadian singles Chart.

In 1983, 'Band of Gold' was recorded by Disco/Hi-NRG singer Sylvester on Megatone Records and released as a 12" single. Sylvester's version reached number 18 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Pla chart and number 67 on the UK Singles Chart.

Kimberley Locke released her version of 'Band of Gold' to radio in 2007 as the second single from her album 'Based on a True Story'. It became Locke's second single to hit number 1 on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play chart and her seventh to go top 10 on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart.

Alphaville - Forever Young - Single

'Forever Young' is the title track Alphaville's 1984 debut album. Though it was not the group's highest-charting European hit and failed to reach the American Top 40 despite three separate U.S. single releases, 'Forever Young' became something of a pop standard and has been covered by numerous artists since its 1984 debut.

Originally released by Alphaville as a single in 1984, 'Forever Young' was available in both its original mix and also in a dance version titled the "Special Extended Mix." Over the years the band has released several remixes and demo versions of the song.

The song's music video shows the band performing in one of the halls at Holloway Sanatorium in England. A number of ragged people ranging from children to the elderly awake to observe the band, then walk through a diamond-shaped glowing portal.

Just a year after the song's initial release, pop singer Laura Branigan covered 'Forever Young' on her album 'Hold Me' and began a tradition of performing the song as an encore at her concerts until her death in 2004

Amid rumours that Branigan was going to release the song as a single Alphaville's re-released the single in the US, but it did not prove to be massively popular. Branigan's version, though promoted on stickers adorning the album, subsequently remained an album cut in the US.

The Alphaville version was released a third time in the US in 1988, to promote Alphaville: The Singles Collection, and peaked at number 65, their highest charting (and also last) single on the Billboard Hot 100.
